Advice please? So, I just recently (as in like, yesterday) started going to the gym and I'm going again tomorrow with a friend (goal is 3 times a week) but to be honest whenever I go with someone I pretty much just follow them around and do what they do, maybe adjusting the weight accordingly. I honestly have like, no clue what to do to achieve my goals or suit my body type or whatever. I'm 5'5" about 205 and naturally really stocky, a lot of people have asked if I work out already, but I tend to just see myself as chunky, lol. I really want to get big, I'm just not really sure how or where to start and I'm kind of embarrassed to admit how very little I know to anyone I work out with. Anybody have any suggestions or words of wisdom you may be able to share? (side note: I'm probably going to pick up some protein for post workout before work tomorrow, any suggestions on like, a brand or things to look for/avoid?) |

Big as in bodybuilder big and ripped or big as in musclebear/fireplug? |

For a starter workout to gain size stick to the big three as the core of your exercise routine----Squats--should be your #1 exercise, bench press, and deadlifts--learn good form there are sources on the web with pictures. A good weight gain program is one called super squats--20 rep squats- very difficult but will give you results. As far as protein powders, some of them are loaded with sugars stay away from those--I am a big fan of Optimum Nutrition --there flavors are palatable and they make a decent product--often on sale at sites like bodybuilding.com--better prices than GNC. |

I'm not really worried so much about being ripped, so I guess musclebear/fireplug would be about right. I'm looking for that really stocky-muscle kinda look. |

If that's the case then I highly recommend StrongLifts 5x5, a 12-week beginner strength training program. Start off light and learn and keep up good form (e.g. Each pull-up rep must be done from a dead hang). |
