Tips for trying to eat more?

Anyone got any tips when it comes to trying to eat more? My appetite kinda gets in the way. I eat ok - but I'd like to gain more mass, and I know I gotta be eating way more calories for that.

Any mental tricks? Or are there certain high-calorie foods that don't leave you feeling bloated when you eat em?

First of all start with a large breakfast, eventually this will help peak your appetite throughout the day. Secondly, if you are not lactose intolerant, drink more whole milk. You need to eat throughout the day not just big meals.

Meal replacement shakes (Muscle Milk, Met Rx, Myoplex), and believe it or not, packaged frozen meals like Weight Watchers, Stouffers Lean Cuisine. Usually they are higher in carbs, anywhere from 30-70g. The protein content usually varies from 14-21g. The higher carbs are in the pasta meals, of course. Check the salt content though, and/or drink more water to flush it.

Cool. Yeah, I realize I need to eat between meals too. I don't really have access to a kitchen for the most part, so I need to look for simple stuff that I can just down pretty much as is. I do have a fridge at work, so I can start taking advantage of that.

Any particular MRPs you recommend as being the best bang for the buck? Anything equivalent as regards generic foodstuffs (PB, whole milk, etc.).

And if I'm snacking all day, how do I keep an appetite for the main meals ... or does it not matter at that point ...

You could also eat only as snacks throughout the day if practical. Generally, when you work and use extra calories, you get more hungry, but making yourself eat more than normal will also stretch your tummy out to fit in more. I found when I stoped going to the gym at one point, my diet shrank significantly and I needed an hour of sleep less after all.

Thanks for all those who've responded.

Yes, I'm exercising regularly - I've been going 6x a week for 45 minutes each workout; lifting weights, etc. I'm nearly done taking 10 lbs of weight gainer (MHP Up Your Mass), and I'm now at 172 lbs (last I weighed I was 160). So that feels good. Still got to find ways to eat more - my problem is more with appetite. I eat a reasonable breakfast (a few eggs usually, toast cereal, pb, etc.), but nothing ginormous. I'd like to get to that point, but need to kinda stretch the stomach out or something ... need to get that appetite up.

I have noticed that taking the weight gainer has helped increase my appetite a little.

At first its difficult to work up an appetite especially for breakfast but once you make it a habit, make sure that you make delicious healthy food and work out hard and before you know it your appetite will be through the roof.

The best way to increase your appetite and eat more is that you should eat with company because according to a research a person eats 30% more when eats with a group of people.

I find that when I slowly increase my calorie intake, it begins to gain some momentum and soon I'm hungry all the time, even within an hour of eating a big meal I'm hungry again.

More than just a source of essential fats, nuts are a great way to add crunch and protein to veggie meals. They?re also a wonderfully portable snack for vegetarians and carnivores alike.

Timing

I've found that if I keep a consistent eating schedule I'm able to eat more. I noticed this last summer when I worked from 8-5 every day in an office where I could eat whenever I wanted.

Eating every three hours: I'd have breakfast around 9am, and then I would have lunch three hours later at 12pm, whether I was hungry or not... then at 3pm I'd have another meal, 6pm, 9pm, sleep... repeat. If I slept in too late on the weekend I would not have a regular appetite.

I found that over time I had conditioned myself to be hungry every three hours.

Worth a try?

Its important that your food is healthy, but also important that it is delicious. I see many bodybuilders eating boiled chicken breasts, egg whites and white rice as a meal---life is too short to eat crappy tasting food. Use more spices and herbs and your healthy food will taste better, cut down on the salt by using more spices and herbs. Learn to cook it makes all of the difference, and by cooking I actually mean cooking not just heating pre-made junk from the store.

If you drink alcohol, cut it out completely and see what happens. I found that the (college) drinking had a big effect on how receptive I was to food, even for days after a party.

There is some great stuff on here! I wanted to second the cutting alcohol: it is a toxin! I'd also like to second the veggie stuff: meat is very filling.

Fermented food is a must, It helps your intestines, and keeps things... moving. I eat at least a bit of sauerkraut every morning, and every night.
