Captain America movie disappointment

OK guys ... I was a big Marvel comics fan in my youth. And anybody who was as geeky as me KNOWS that Steve Rogers (a/k/a Captain America)began the series as a skinny guy and, through a secret US government experiment, turns into a big ol' muscled super hero.
SO! I went to the movie today expecting a great onscreen transformation ...wahoo, right? WRONG! I was way disappointed and I want to warn any other transformation fan to not get your hopes up.
There's a lot of "bells and whistles": bright lights, steam, noise ... but the whole transformation takes place INSIDE a machine. So he goes in puny and comes out as Captain America, without the "in-between". Plus, they only show his muscles for only a moment. He puts on a shirt right away.
Yike! What a missed cinematic opportunity! No thrills there.
I just had to share ...

You're right, no muscle growth, not enough shirtless Steve, and...

I loved it. Completely awesome retro futurist vibe set in an obviously alternate universe (no one was demonstrating anti-grav cars at the didn't-happen-in-1942 World's Fair), with lots of minor Marvel stock characters mixed in throughout. I'm just sorry I didn't see it in 3D (which I plan to correct at some point!)

And it's a Marvel movie so fer gawdsakes stay through the credits!

xoxo

Richard

We knew for months that the growth sequence wouldn't be shown. It's disappointing but it's also a chance for us to use our imaginations. I love the part where Steve shouts out "I can take it!" Corny, yes, but it was the part that felt the most like what I wanted the whole movie to be like.

It's all about the unveiling where Chris Evan's pecs are so perfectly lit to seem massive. He's always had a nice chest but the lights made them seem huge. I wanted to jump into the movie and play with his nipples.

Arpee ... you are totally right! The concept of 1940's "futurism" was fantastic. The detail was great. They took a comic book "feel" and ran with it. And the part that Yachi... talks about, "I can take it!" made me laugh out loud!
I really didn't mean to imply that I didn't like the movie. I was just saying, "Heck, I wanted to see a durn transformation!" Can ya blame me?
By-the-by, I did see it in 3D ... and Chris Evans pecs in 3D are something to behold ... especially when he's running ...!

Cool beans, Leo! And, yes, the lack of a growth scene was disappointing but we make do, n'est-ce pas? I definitely need to see it in 3D!

What a friend (in the movie business) said:

Also the NY Worlds Fair didn't happen in 1942. But who's paying attention? Actually I do agree, this was the best of the summer action movies by far. Finally a director (other than Cameron) who knows what to do with 3D to actually enhance the film rather than be just a gimmick to make money. Too bad that so many lousy 3D films have come out that most everybody refuses to pay the extra surcharge, and are watching this one (if they actually are watching it) in 2D. I've known that Johnston was a winner every since ROCKETEER.

I did see it in 3D. The transformation scene and him running through Brooklyn in a tight white t made the 3D upgrade worth it. Chris Evans is really built. Based on the ending, I'd say that sequels are planned. If so, I'm thinking more muscle will be on display!
