Flexing and Grunting

A question for the big muscle guys . . . I see so many videos of bodybuilders grunting and woofing as they flex their huge muscles. Do you make these sounds to increase the stimulation of those watching you or is this some sort of natural reflex? Either way, I think it's awesome but I'm just curious. Thanks.

It's kinda all of that cozman.
It's a natural reflex and enhances the muscle recruitment during the flex much like how in karate they yell and give outbursts during a strike.

Some admirers like those grunt sounds so I might do them esp for him, while others don't like it an find it corny.

Hi cozman,

I am not a huge grunter....unless someone likes it..and quite often the noises are because I am straining to flex hard, expel the air from my lungs, and suck my waist in to add to the pose. Try doing it yourself...often you can't help but make a noise that sounds like a grunt. If people like it all the better

So is that the same reason that female tennis players grunt when they hit the ball?

Quite right suma.... I always found it very awesome when I did Karate that some of the Katas required you to Kiai (shout). When the Tameshiwari (breaking) was going on you would get the yell or the roar before the Kateteka broke through boards or concrete.
Bodybuilders grunting and roaring as they force heavy reps has the same effect.

I thought most guys grunted or exhaled because concentrating on the flex pushes air out of 'em, basically. Like when you take a deep breath and exhale to concentrate. I also assume some force a grunt while in public so it can be a "hey look at these" kind of thing to potential onlookers.

It's so hot listening to a muscle beast grunting, snarling and roaring in the gym as they dominate and conquer insane amounts of weight. It's like the perfect combination of power, effort and triumph!

It's weird but I don't find effortless super strength that hot. To me, a stud in the gym grunting as he curls 70 lbs is way hotter than Superman casually lifting a mountain.

Sometimes grunting is a symptom of being a gym douche:

#5 Unnecessary grunting

We get it. Weights are heavy, and you have to lift them from point A to point B. Let?s not make the distance between those two points equal the decibel level of a Vuvuzela blown straight into your ear canal at point-blank range. Acting like an animal by grunting as if you?re lifting the gym itself is only acceptable when you are actually LIFTING THE GYM ITSELF. Being a show-pony gets you a featured article in the ?Book of douche-ness??.

I could never understand why grunting and flexing make it onto so many "gym pet peeve" lists. When I see and hear it, it doesn't distract from but enhances my workout, jazzing me up to train HARDER.
