Thanks!! __________________________________________________ “Ben, grab on!” Startled at first, Ben suddenly realized Tug's white belt was within his grasp. He let go of the roots he was holding, one hand at a time, and took hold of the belt with all his remaining strength. “I’ve got it!” Tug braced himself for the weight of his friend, and then he pulled as hard as he could, back upward over the edge of the cliff. All the movement was causing large chunks of the hillside to crumble away, but Tug just kept repeating the words of his father in his head. One great thing! One great thing! Tug grimaced and twisted the shirt around his hands to keep it from slipping, holding on with every ounce of his being. Even though Ben was lying on a slope and not completely dangling in the air, the weight was still considerable and the pressure on Tug’s hands was almost unbearable. Thankfully, his months of weight training were paying off. Putting his butt in the air, he gradually folded his legs underneath until he was sitting on his knees, and then slowly but surely moved his torso backward until he was able to extend his legs down in front of him. Although his butt was now perched on the ground and his feet were dug into muddy trenches about six inches lower, Tug recognized he was in the squat position. Having just squatted 300 pounds the other day, he finally smiled as he realized that all he had to do was squat Ben up the side of the cliff. Tug then tugged with all of his might. One great thing! One great thing! ----------------------------------------------------- Ben heard Tug’s command to “grab on” and took the belt into his hands, but he realized his hold was tenuous as his fingers were almost numb from gripping the roots so tightly. “I’ve got it!” he yelled back to Tug. He didn’t hear an answer, but he could still hear the Pat Benatar song, which was just about at its conclusion. Just when you think you got it down Ben felt Tug pulling on the improvised rope. The extra support finally allowed him to kick off his flip-flops, dig his toes into the soft earth, and propel himself upward. Your heart in pieces on the ground Ben had made it up almost two feet, but still had another four to go, when the ground began to fall away all around him. His heart sank as the slope gradually disappeared, making the climb more and more difficult. “Pull harder, Tug! The hill is falling apart!” They whisper… Tug called back from above. “I will get you up, Ben! Promises… “I promise!” In The… The soil was falling faster now and Ben had little left to stand on. Pushing with all of his leg strength, and being pulled from above by his guardian angel, Ben mounted a last-ditch effort to scale the remaining four feet. 1... 2… 3… 4… Guided by Tug’s belt, Ben scrambled as hard as he could up the evaporating slope. Faster than he thought possible, he reached the ledge and charged up over the side, grabbing Tug in the process and hurtling them both away from the dangerous ground. Dark… ----------------------------------------------------- Ben landed hard in the mud about 10 feet back from the cliff. He could hear the sounds of the wind and the rain, but the song from the radio was no longer playing, and he considered that it may have fallen off the ledge and plummeted to the rocks below. It was hard to see at first, between the dirt in his eyes, the rain, and the black of night, but Ben eventually spotted Tug, laying on his back, about five feet away. Even though his body was incredibly sore, Ben leapt up and ran to his friend. “You did it, Tug! You did it!” he shouted with a big smile on his face. Ben knelt down and put his hands on Tug’s shirtless shoulders. “You saved my life! You promised you would and you didn’t let me down!” Tug remained still. The rain was pelting his mud-caked body, but he didn’t move a muscle and his eyes stayed closed. Ben suddenly became worried and gently shook his friend. “Tug? Tug? Wake up!” Still nothing from the younger Yates son. “Tug? What’s wrong! Open your eyes!” screamed Ben. It was then that he saw it – the large flat rock underneath Tug’s head, which it must have landed on after Ben pushed him away from the cliff and he fell to the ground. “Tug, please! Wake up!” Ben pleaded, as he gently scooped up Tug's head and cradled it in his arms. “Tug! You've got to wake up!" “Tug!” he cried, looking up to rain-filled sky and praying for one more miracle on that dark, dark night. Last edited by Padraig; August 29th, 2009 at 06:16 PM. |

You Rock!!! |
| |||
Ahh I might have to rescend that "You Rock" comment as I scribed that before reading... just exuberance...geez you won't cut these two some slack at all will ya <hee>. Excellent cliff-hangers though. I hope this doesn't end badly. The whole "some stories don't have happy endings" stuff is hogwash. People like happy endings. Makes us think their is hope in the world b/c reality...sometimes kinda tough on the ole psyche. |
| |||
Am I the only one who enjoys a good unhappy ending? :-) |
| |||
I'll go out on a limb and say yes. There's already too many yellow brick roads in life. A little vicarious happy ending never hurt anybody. I'm a firm believer that things will always work themselves out. A friend told me that once...so true and hasn't failed me yet. Even the crap life throws at us...in the long run works out. Maybe not the happy path we envision but what's the fun in success if there isn't a bit of work involved. Shakespeare said it best, "things won are done joy's soul lies in the doing" You can take that one to the bank! *officially coming off my soapboox* Last edited by memorex414; August 27th, 2009 at 04:37 PM. |

Memorex, I do appreciate your fervor! You won't have to wait too long to find out what happens, as I should have the next chapter up by Friday or Saturday. And you should know right away, from the title of the song in the chapter heading, the fate of Tug. |

Hi Mike! I'm so glad you have kept reading ? I really appreciate it! All shall be revealed soon! |
| |||
Sorry! I misread! "The end" referred only to "Promises in the Dark." Oh, boy! Mike __________________ --It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change. Charles Darwin |

I apologize for any confusion, Mike. It's only the end of the song, not the story. |

This has to be one of the best continuing stories that I have read here for sometime, just enough to keep us guessing about the next part. Has been a really good read, and the thought that there is more to come...? I can't wait. Really, honestly a well writen piece of work Thank you. Neil __________________ ..... Neil, I was having a pretty good day so far, and then I read your post, and now I'm having an awesome day! Thanks so much for the kind words!! And yes, there is more to come! |
| |||
A very exciting end, and the the sudden reversal... oh man! You've prepared us along the way for an unhappy ending, and I am "prepared", but still, what a heartbreaker that would be! (another Pat Benatar reference) Anyway, a great story and thanks for writing! __________________ Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the biggest stud of all? |

I'm putting the finishing touches on the next chapter right now. It should be up tonight, so be prepared. :-) |
